WHAT IS JUUL?

JUUL is a e-cigarette product that uses liquid replacement cartridges (“pods”) to deliver high levels of nicotine to the user. The device heats and vaporizes the flavored liquid that the user then inhales. JUUL e-cigarette products are highly popular among teenagers and young adults because of targeted marketing campaigns.

WHY CAN JUUL BE DANGEROUS TO MINORS?

JUUL e-cigarettes may also cause nicotine addiction because of the way nicotine salts are quickly absorbed by the body. This may be even more addictive to minors than traditional cigarettes. One (1) JUUL pod is equal to approximately twenty (20) traditional cigarettes. However, A JUUL e-cigarette user may suffer injury due to seizures and convulsions because of the high concentration of nicotine in the cartridges. These can occur without any prior medical history; symptoms of nicotine poisoning also include nausea, vomiting, headaches, tremors, seizures, depression, and coma.

JUUL’S MARKETING TARGETS MINORS.

It is believed that JUUL is strategically marketing to minors because they are more likely to become addicted and less likely to easily quit. JUUL’s strategy has been to: (1) target minors using fruit/candy flavored products; (2) incorporate youth lifestyle messages and social media advertisements; and (3) improperly market its product as a smoking cessation product.

WHO MAY HAVE A CLAIM?

Minors using JUUL may be entitled to compensation for medical treatment, pain and suffering, and/or punitive damages. The claims being investigated are for JUUL users under 26 years old and who potentially suffer from one or all of the following:

  1. nicotine addition after using JUUL products;
  2. respiratory, heart, or other health related conditions after using JUUL products (including stroke, heart attack, or seizure); and/or
  3. behavioral conditions after using JUUL products (including cognitive issues, altered behavior, and substance addiction).
